GLSKA SPRING RENDEZVOUS 2012 – JUNE 22-24
 

Join us for a weekend of kayaking to build your knowledge and skills and expand your roster of kayak friends for future tripping!

GLSKA will hold its annual Rendezvous this year at Oak Point Campground, Friday, June 22 to Sunday, June 24.   The Oak Point Campground belongs to the Wasauksing Parry Island First Nation and is located next to Wasauksing Marina at the western end of Parry Island (about 25 kilometres outside of Parry Sound).  Detailed directions will be provided in registration packages and on the website.

Our weekend program will include a variety of workshops and skills sessions both on the water and off.  Our club volunteers have years of experience and are happy to share their knowledge in these informal sessions.  We’re dreaming up a range of possible topics from rough water paddling manoeuvres and the art of Greenland paddling, to charting a trip with GPS and diva campsite cooking.  Let us know your interest by e-mailing suggestions to the contacts below. 

It’s a long and winding road to Oak Point but well worth the drive, as this wilderness location gives us lots of opportunity to explore the rugged islands of Georgian Bay or even underwater treasures from lost shipwrecks.  There will be a number of options for short and long day trips.  We hope to include in the schedule some expert guidance on star gazing or geologic history, and an introduction to what makes this region a UNESCO biosphere-protected area.  Stay tuned for more information!

As with every Rendezvous, it’s an informal, friendly setting, with plenty of free time for swapping stories with fellow members about great trip destinations or favourite kayak gear, especially during our Friday night welcome social (BYOB and we’ll bring cheese) or the amazing potluck dinner on Saturday night, or the story-telling time around the campfire.  With a little cajoling, you’ll be striving for first place in our Qayaq Olympics that tests your sense of humour more than anything.  Watch our website for the notice of this year’s Saturday night live entertainment. 

White Squall will provide rental kayaks for those interested, and has agreed to deliver them, without charge, to our site.  Call them directly to make arrangements at (705) 342-5324.

All this is available for a bargain, early-bird rate of $60 (including campground fees).  Check the enclosed information for the full breakdown of fee options.  You’ll notice that we’ve increased the rate slightly this year, and that’s because the wilderness location requires us to hire additional facilities.  Rendezvous still remains an incredible value for the money. 

Members are welcome to bring family and friends as guests at an early bird fee of $70.  For those new to GLSKA, Rendezvous provides an excellent opportunity to get to know the club and find like-minded people for future tripping.  All attendees must be members or guests, but at the low cost of membership to GLSKA, Rendezvous is a great way to jump in and find out if the club is for you.   Additional information and a registration form were included with the spring issue of the newsletter.  Reserve your place now to qualify for the early bird discount!
